Charlie & The Chocolate Factory
OK OK I know that both movies were/are titled "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory" but...whatever. The -book's- title is as I titled this thread.
So.....who's the REAL Willy Wonka?
Gene Wilder?
Johnny Depp?
Who do YOU vote for and why?

i am a HUGE Johnny Depp/Tim Burton/ Danny Elfman fan... HOWEVER...
i would have to go with Gene Wilder on this one. There's never anything like the original vision.

Gene Wilder looks so much more Willy Wonkaish. Johnny Depp just looks...scary.

wilder was funny
interesting and a great person to play the role. depp in this role sucks
you dont even buy him being crazy or a loon
depp needs to stick with the roles that work for him
wilder rules in that role
depp just sucks
hes lame at it and he sucks in this flim
i wont go see it cuz i saw the trailer witch makes me sick almost threw up becuase of it
turning a nice story of a funny candy man like wilder into gothic like trash is just wrong we learned this when people remake already great movies
like war of the worlds
depp go back to roles like the secret window and stop trying to be crazy becuase you are unable to be a crazy candy man.
thats my two cents.

To me Johnny Depp looks very like a girl in this movie.
I liked the original much better
No plans on watching this one.

I have to admit though that Roal Dahl (sp?), the author, is a VERY bizarre writer. His Willy Wonka was quite a nutcase. Maybe this version is going to be more 'true' to the book but it won't be the same.

Well as i have'nt seen the new version yet so I can't comment. Strange how people can say a film they have never seen is or will be rubbish. I will defentaly be going to see it.
Correct me if i'm wrong but was'nt the original a musical?

I loved the book.
I never particularly liked the movie. (For one, it starts out slow, with little gain.) I probably won't see the remake either.

Gene has more of that "I'm nuts!" look to him, yet he can retian a seriousness when he needs to. So I say Gene.

I was originally (somewhat) interested in the remake because of Burton/Depp but then I saw the preview trailer.
I'm no longer interested.
And even if I was still interested, Gene is the tops. Depp's take so far looks like he used Michael Jackson for inspiration. Gah.

GACK! What a horrible thought!
And I don't think that the new version is "crap" at all. I haven't seen it but don't plan to as I think that, just from the trailer, it looks frightening and doesn't interest me much.
Yes, the original was a musical.
No, the kids didn't die in the book. At the end, there is a terrific drawing of all of them coming out of the factory: August Gloop has been trimmed down, Mike TeeVee is basketball player tall, Violet Beaureguarde is thin again but purple and Veruca Salt is covered with trash. Trust me on this: I'm a school teacher and read it to my students every year.

Alrighty ^^ Just that I heard someone say that the author was quite sadistic in this book and killed off some of the kids. Guess that's false then, although that'd make a more interesting read IMO XD

Seeing as how I see a lot of people judging their opinions simply on the trailer...
I'm not going to do that, because I think that's just stupid, I've seen loads of movies where the trailers were nothing like the real movie, and then I've seen trailers where they gave away EVERY part of the movie (A series of unfortunate events)
I don't believe you can judge a movie just "on the trailer" I'm actually going to go, you know, SEE the movie before I make my opinion, so it's not ignorant.
I mean honestly, you guys liked the original movie because you saw it and thought Gene played a good part, what right do you have to say that Depp's going to suck when you're not going to even see the movie?
That's like saying a play is horribly thrown together and that it absolutely blows, but you haven't read through the script or seen the play yet.
Honestly, I thought you people would at least make an attempt to see the movie before saying it's going to suck, anything can suck with that attitude.
Anyway, I liked the book. It really made it feel like Willy was a nutcase. The original movie with Gene just didn't seem that way, it was basically "Oh look I'm in silly little fantasy candy land, this is land of junk food!!!!!!11!!!!!!!!111!!"
And it's like...yeah, funny, but not true to the book. Acting silly's nice and all but you never got the feeling you did when reading the book.
I've liked Depp's work in most all the movies he's done, and I have a feeling he'll pull this off better than most of you...assume.

Agreed. The new one could be good, but nothing beats the original.

I don't like Johnny Depp. I think that he's terribly miscast though this IS a Burton/Elfman film so he probably fits all right in -their- version.
PieXas, relax. This was just a 'for fun' thread. I don't think you need to go around insinuating that people are ignorant if they choose not to see a movie, regardless of -why- they opt not to. That's the way of humanity. LOL!
Ever looked at a book jacket, read the blurb on the flyleaf and said to yourself, "Gee that doesn't seem like my kind of book. It looks kind of silly." Then you leave the bookstore and go home. Viewing the trailer for this moving and opting not to see it is very similar.
Play nice or we won't invite you to any more tea parties! If you've ever read Dahl's The Twits, I'll do to YOU what Mrs. Twit did to her husband....and it's not a nice thing, believe me.
